Claudia's Final Fantasy XII Fran Cosplay: Helmet

Total Time: 9 days | Total Price: $14.55 | Status: In Progress

How I made this costume:

Helmet:
Just like the rest of the craft foam armor, the helmet was made using the same technique. I began by taking measurements of my head, and figuring out how the helmet would fit. It was also crucial to make room for the hair and ears as well. Fran's forehead is a little shorter than mine, so I needed to make sure that the lace-front wig is falling precisely where it needs to be so that we have the same proportions.

Then I created the pattern in Photoshop with my Wacom, printed it, cut it out with craft scissors, traced the back of the pattern over my light box with white charcoal, and carefully pressed the pattern down onto the craft foam to transfer the design over. The entire pattern was two layers. One for the base, followed by the top layer of trim. I didn't need to create separate pieces for the base like I initially thought I would, because it all worked out with only one. Very carefully I then cut out all of the delicate trim with the tiny brow scissors and super glued them on one by one. This by far was the most intricate piece of armor and I'm glad that I got it right the first time, because it took me so long to do. After the trim was all laid and glued, I shaped it over the stove top on med-hi as usual, finished off by gluing the sides together, and gave it one more blast of heat to make sure that the shape was correct and that it lined up properly on my face.

Another thing to note as well is that I poked small holes in the foam where I planned on putting the silver metal brads. This was all planned out in the pattern, but I knew that the outline would be covered up with the paint. So the holes were perfect for indicating where the center of each one was suppose to go.
