Fran Portrait painted by Claudia

Why I chose to make this costume:
There is no other character that has spoken to me over the years the way that Fran does. She is everything that I appreciate: Strong, intelligent, beautiful, eloquent, cunning, down to earth, in tune with nature, free, and above all else she's a pirate! I relate to this all so much and find that we have much in common. She's one of three sisters, left the safety of her family, still yearns for the nature that she once knew but moved to a large city to expand her horizons, has an unquenchable sense of adventure, is very fit, and has a fun accent. Even her costume's something that mirrors her personality. It's organic shapes and plant-like design are so beautiful. Her sense of confidence to wear such a thing is impressive too. Something I myself had to come to grips with if I wanted to pull this off the best I can. The female form is elegant and natural. The way I see it is that she's so comfortable with her body that it works to her advance. Similar to how a tribeswoman wears a lone cloth; that's purely functional, free, and acceptable. Which is something that the western culture has forgotten. So this will be my test, and I'm proud to wear it.

My thoughts on this costume:
This is one of the hardest, but most artistic, challenges I've had yet. That's why it's taken me so very long to produce. It tests all of my abilities, which is both indescribably rewarding and excruciatingly frustrating. All of the skills that I have learned at university are coming into play now for this costume. Everything from sculpting, to mixed media, painting, Photoshop, photography, makeup art, acting, and understanding how to portray a character through body language and emotion. Along with my traditional training, the Internet has supplied me with many wonderful videos, articles, and lessons that have helped me throughout the process. Which I'm very grateful for every piece of useful information I've found.

Fran's costume is armor heavy, which presents a different type of challenge than sewing. It's also skintight, so I must maintain a figure that reflects the shape of the character. There's not much room for error, and if my body changes I simply wouldn't be able to fit into it. With that being said, I'm excited to bring this great character to life, and I'll give it my all. She'll be my one, and only, signature cosplay.

    9. So awesome! That's cool that you're going to do a Spartan! Nice blue color too. I'm so excited for you.

Mine isn't right now. Boo. :( I've been working on YouTube. I really want to start it up again though; I'm currently working on the bodysuit right now.

    10. Yeah, I cannot wait to start working on it. My problem is, I don't know where to start and I cannot find anyone locally to help me on it.

Aw *gives you a long hug* I know you can do it. I cannot wait to see your progress.

      Delete
    11. I hear you about that. Start with Pre-Planning. Gather reference, save up money, create a schedule, horde supplies, etc. Break it down into really small tasks and goals, so that you can focus.

What's going to be your main technique? Here's something that will help you immensely. She even did the same color: http://www.405th.com/showthread.php/35790-KAT-ARMOR-BUILD-with-custom-undersuit

I suggest reading the whole thread. It's worth the research.

      *HUGS* Thank you again.
      ~Claudia

    12. I think I will start doing that. Thank you for the advice and tips.

As for my main technique, I have no clue on that. I just tried to sign on the site but for some odd reason my account was deactivated for no reason. I just emailed the admin. about it so I have to wait for him to reactivate my account. When he does, I will read the whole thread.

You are most welcome my friend :)
      Eric

P.S. Have you played Halo before? If you have, which one is your favorite game?

      Delete
    13. No problem Eric! Yeah, it's a great guide. I'm sure you'll finding it useful. Good luck with your account. Yes, I've played the first one with a friend. It was fun. :)

    20. Well, I do trash for half of the hospital on the week days and the whole hospital on the weekends. For half the hospital I took 13,298 steps, I burned 634 cal. and I walked 6.54 miles. Now this is for 8 hours a day. For the Whole hospital, I took 16,826 steps, I burned 794 cal. and I walked 8.19 miles. It's non stop for me except when I go on breaks.

You're welcome :) I really cannot wait to see it.

It was really sweet of you to stay a bit for me in the chat, when you didn't have too. Thank you so much for doing that, you really are a sweetheart and I am glad to have met you. What day in June were you thinking on doing it again? I look forward on chatting with you again and longer as well.

    31. Hurray! Thanks Eric. They're going well. It's taking me a bit of time because I have to wait for coats to dry, so I work on new patterns in the meantime. The bodysuit is ridiculous! XD

    37. It's good. The paint is drying, then I get to do stress tests on it and bang it up to see what happens and how well it holds. :) I'm putting it up tonight though, so that I can watch the Oscars. I'm excited about that!

      Hugs!
      ~Claudia

Oh! By the way, do you use Shapeways: http://www.shapeways.com/

    38. Hey, sorry for the late reply. Right on, how did the stress test go? I am always excited to watch the oscars. Though sadly I didn't get to watch all of it because I had to go to bed. How's work going for you? I hope you are having a great time over there :)

      Take care my dear friend,
      Eric

I have not used Shapeways, do you?

      Delete
    39. It's still drying. :) I finished up the last coats today. So I'll test it soon.
Yeah, the Oscars were good this year. I always enjoy them.
Work's been good; thank you. Busy, but good.

I was just curious if you have used it, because I might get stuff printed there for the costume. I've heard good things. :)

Ah right, let me know how that goes. Oh, before I forget, I have a 3 day convention coming up this weekend, really excited about it too. I will be at my booth for a couple of hours for the day as well. My first time working at a booth.

*gives you another hug* Hope to hear from you again soon,

P.S. How's your sister doing? Is there anything I can pray for you for?

Wow! Congrats about the booth! :D Those are fun. Rock it for sure.

She's well; thank you. I'm hoping to hear from her soon to see how her final appointment went. I hope she's out off the woods, so to speak. I appreciate any and all your thoughts and prayers. Thank you again.

Also, the glue sealer paint test worked out awesome. I was able to bend it harshly and it doesn't crack. So it's a must that foam be sealed before painting. I'll write more about it in the armor blog posts. :) Cheers!

    46. Sweet :) Hope you enjoy them.

We are partnered with Best Buy, Barns & Noble, Star Bucks and a lot more places. If you are interested, when I get my business up and going (hopefully in 2 weeks), I will send you the link and you can check it out. 54. You're welcome :)

Oh thank you so much my dear friend, I will the best that I can.

Now I am torn between two sets of armor I want to build. Master Chief from Halo 4 and Delta 38 from Star Wars Republic Commando. If you need pics of Delta 38 I can get you some.

      Delete
    55. I think that you should go with your gut instinct. Which one speaks to you more? :3
      ~Claudia

      Delete
    56. I think Master Chief, because he will be a lot cheaper than Delta-38. The kit for 38 is 1000-1200, which is way out of my price range. I mean eventually, I would like to do 38, but I don't think right now is a good time. How's your cosplay going?

      Delete
    57. Oh okay. :) Sounds like you have it figured out then. I didn't know that you could buy kits. I thought that you had to make everything.

It's on hold because my jumbo sheet of Worbla is coming today. I'm so excited to get it. Then it's crafting time! Excellent!

      Cheers hun,
      ~Claudia

      Delete
    58. Well, there are some kits that you can buy like the Stormtroopers, Clone Troopers, Darth Vader, and Republic Commando's. There are now some new kits that are now coming out, but they will cost you a pretty penny.

Yay!!! You rock it out. I am getting excited to see it as well.

Take care and have fun my dear friend. Hugs!
      Eric

      Delete
    59. Oh, okay. :3 I see.

      That's awesome dear. Hugs!
      ~Claudia

      Delete
    60. That is why I am wanting to go towards Master Chief from Halo 4. It might be just a bit cheaper than the actual kits.

      Did your Worbla come in?
      Eric

      Delete
    61. Sure thing; I can understand that.

Yes it did, but I haven't messed with it yet. :3 I'm excited to though.
      ~Claudia

      Delete
    62. Yeah, so hopefully sometime soon, I will be able to work on Chief.

I am excited too, I cannot wait to see it. Everything else going okay for you? Your sister doing good?

      Eric

      Delete
    63. Awesome! Wooo!
Yeah, been doing lots of yoga. Getting toned, which is cool. Still working on my splits, but I can do a pullup, which is great because that was a resolution. Now I'm working on doing two. XD

Kinda, unfortunately the doctors found another mass. :( Very not cool. So we're waiting for more results now.
      ~Claudia

      Delete
    64. YUS!!!
That is awesome, I have tried yoga and I just couldn't do it. I do T'ai Chi in stead and I am teaching my father it as well. How are you doing on the splits? I am also working on that as well, I don't know if I am making any progress or not but I am going to keep working on it. That is great that you did a pullup, I can't do that yet, but I am going to the gym now at my work and started to lift weights. I am surprised on how much I can lift with my legs and arms.

Oh no, I will definitely keep her in my prayers. Please let me know on the progress and the results.
      Eric

      Delete
    65. That's great that you're teaching your father. I'm sure that's fun! :)
I'm working on them everyday, and I'm way more flexible than before, but still not down to the ground. Oh cool! Yeah, that's awesome. Keep going!

Yeah, I was pretty surprised too. Thank you Eric.
      ~Claudia

      Delete
    66. It is a lot of fun, he is enjoying it and so am I.
That's great, keep going and you will be. How far are you to the ground. I am about a foot away from the ground. With my arms I can bench press 127 lbs and with my legs, I can lift up to 478 lbs.

I do have a random question for you. Do you have any older brothers?

      Take care my dear friend,
      Eric

      Delete
    67. That's great. :) I'm close, maybe about 6-8 inches from the ground, depending on how warmed up I am. Yes! Awesome! We have to keep going then. :)
Wow! That's great about the weights too.

      Haha, nope, just two sisters.
You too hun; enjoy your weekend.
      <3 Claudia

      Delete
    68. That's awesome, keep going and I know you can do it :) By the way, I was wondering on what kind of stretching do you do for the splits and for how long do you do it for?
Thank you very much, I was surprised that I lift that much.

The reason why I was asking is because I was wondering if you would like to have me as an older brother?

      You do the same Claudia.

      How's your sister doing?

      *hugs* Eric

    69. Here's a video that's helped me:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWs1VP4xl-U
I do a variety of different stretches though. Just try to hold them as long as you can, but at least 30 seconds each. :)

Aww! That's very sweet of you. Is that how you see yourself?

I haven't talked to her since the last time. I'm sure that she is well though. :) Thank you.

      Hugs!
      ~Claudia

      Delete
    70. Sweet, thank you very much. I will definitely check that out.
Okay, cause I have been doing some stretches for 10 seconds each. But I will do 30 next time.

It is, but only if you want me to be your brother.

      Okay, that's good :) You're welcome :)

      Eric

      Delete
    71. Yeah, go for it, and good luck to you. :3

Aww! Again, thank you. You are most kind. I could never deny that.
      ~Claudia

    72. Thank you and you too :)

You're welcome :) I am honoured to be your brother and best friend. I am truly glad we met. Maybe one day we can have a cup of coffee together sometime.

      Take care, my dear sister.
      Eric.

It's coming along. I'm working on the mesh on the sides of the bodysuit. It's working out great, and I'm going to buy more supplies this weekend. :) Woo!

Awesome, how is everything going for you? Hope all is well. Oh, when I take my vacation on the last two days of May and the beginning part of June, I will be able to work on my Master Chief armor. I met a guy at my troop yesterday and he already made one. He agreed to help me with mine. I cannot wait to start on it.

      Take care my dear sister,
      Eric

    81. Good, thank you. :) The usual: Work, projects, and exercise.
That's so awesome about your vacation! :D Yeah, for sure, rock it.
      Cheers,

    82. That's good, I am happy to hear that. Any updates on the armor?
Yeah I am really excited about it. I think I am gonna see if I can't start on it early, gonna shoot for next Thursday. I will definitely be taking some progress photos as well.

      Talk to you soon.
      Eric.

    85. It's good. I finished today and it looks fantastic. I'm so happy with it, and am still surprised that I found a mesh that works perfectly. I thought that I was going to have to get it 3D printed or craft it somehow.

      Awesome! :D Happy Sunday Eric!
      ~Claudia

    86. Yay!!! I'm glad it worked out for you, I am getting excited to see it finished. What will you work on next?

I had a fantastic day today. My Star Wars group went to a charity event called March for Babies and there was a king and queen there from the Renaissance Festival. I handed the king my sword and the king knighted me. I am now Sir Jacen Ordo from the clan Ordo. I wasn't expecting that at all. What was also really cool was the king looked a lot like Aragorn from Lord of the Rings.

Happy Sunday to you too my sister.

Oh wow! That is so cool. I'm glad that you had fun. That indeed is quite the day. :D
      ~Claudia

    88. Awesome, I haven't heard of Fimo before. What kind of material is it?

It was an awesome day, I will be posting pictures up here shortly on my DA page.

      Delete
    89. Fimo is clay like Sculpey. One can bake it to harden after sculpting. ;) I used it for the clasp on Fran's collar too: http://claudiasutton.blogspot.com/p/claudias-final-fantasy-xii-fran-cosplay_11.html

      Wonderful to hear hun!

      ~Claudia

    98. That's great!!! You know the thing with cosplaying or making armor is, once you think you are done, you are really not. There is always something to improve on it. So even though it's taken me 4 years to get my armor done, I really won't be done with it. Keep at it, I cannot wait to see how it turns out. I am even getting more excited for you to show it off while wearing it. I will see if I can invite you to a comic con over here next year.

      Delete
    99. Haha! Yes, that's for sure. I don't want to spend all that time/money painting the final set, if I haven't tested out all of the options first. It's going to save so much on paint to do it on little material swatches first. :D

Thank you so much. Yeah, indeed, and I appreciate it so much Eric. What! Oh goodness, that would be so much fun.

    116. Excellent, sounds like a great weekend. We also have a Farmers Market at my work that comes every Friday. Last Saturday I brought home a bag full of nothing but banana's. In another bag there was some baby carrots and apples. They were free, so I thought "why not." Excellent, do you have any photos from your cosplay?
I worked on Saturday, but I was off on Sunday. I did some Bible reading, couldn't go outside cause it was raining. I did practice my martial arts a bit over the weekend.

I had an awesome weekend, I hope you had an awesome weekend as well. I agree with you, reading inside is amazing. I also forgot to mention that I got my hair cut. It was past my shoulders now it's to the middle of my neck.

They came out great. That should be the last of them. I basically did a paint test for every material that I used. It took some time, but I'm really glad I did them, because I didn't want to start painting without testing first.

Heehee! Yes! And have another awesome weekend my friend.

Btw, I saw a rumor on Michinima that Microsoft is buying Capcom, have you heard anything that? If you can't answer that then I understand.

    129. Thank you so much for the picture! You look wonderful. It suits you. :)

Thank you again. Indeed. It's going to be worth it. I'm excited too. It's starting to take form. I do have a question for you by the way: Have you ever painted plastic successfully without it chipping of peeling off? That's what my tests have been for. I'm trying to get something (like a primer) to adhere to the Worbla. Any advice?

      When is your comic convention?
      ~Claudia

      Delete
    130. Aw, you are such a sweetheart *hugs you*

The paint came out pretty good on the first time on my armor. But my helmet was a different story. That thing was such a pain to paint, I had a friend do it for me. When I go and put painters tape on the part of the helmet that I painted to paint another part of it, I took off the tape and the paint came off with it. I have never used Worbla before, so that would be a new one for me as well.

I'm not quite sure yet, but as soon as I know something, I will let you know. Btw, my computer is down once again :(.

      Eric

    131. Aww! :3
What brand/type of paint did you use on your armor? And what type of material was your armor made of? I forget if you've told me already, and if you have this info already online somewhere, feel free to send me a link to it. :) I will gladly read it.

I was researching, and was thinking about picking up some brush-on Krylon Fusion. I just wanted to ask around first if it works.

Oh okay, do you know the name of the convention?
      ~Claudia

      Delete
    132. *hugs you* :)
I believe it was Krylon paint that you can find at Hobby Lobby in the model paint isle. They are a little paint can that are $5. My armor is made out of PVC pipe. Aw, it's okay :)

      Probably a good idea.

It's called Planet Comic Con in Kansas City Missouri. I don't know if it's updated or not. It's a lot of fun :)
