Tom & Kira

This is a redo of a piece that I created back in 2005. Perhaps you remember them? I loved these characters so much and wanted to develop them more. I never felt the original captured them the way that I wanted. That, and I was eager to try a new digital watercolor technique out. I found this a bit frustrating, because learning new things typically is. I actually had to spend way more time than I originally thought it needed for coloring.

The color swatches I made for this painting.  Feel free to use them!

  3. Hello! :) I like your tutorial of watercolor, but I don't understand all you've said (I don't know very well english when it's talked, I've to improve.. hooowever). I've downloaded the 5 brush, but when I color the pattern that it's set it's one of mine with dot... So, I don't know why is so and I don't have paper texture. Could you charge it here, please? :)

    1. Hello there! Thank you very much. I appreciate it. :)
Check your brush settings in Photoshop by going to your Brush Window: That's under Window > Brush. There you can change the settings of the brush you have selected.

As for the texture, here is a free one that you can use that I made:

Or you can image search other "watercolor textures" online. Just make sure that they state that they are free to use. Here are more free-to-use textures that you might enjoy: http://sirius-sdz.deviantart.com/gallery/

      Good luck to you! :)

Wow!!! I've never thought to make my own paper texture! Good idea and nice tutorial :D now here is spring and it's warm so I can try :3

Oook, now I've just watched you on deviantart :)

Could I ask you a last question? here http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=xzux0gGnGMI#t=553 you show the pattern, but why you've set a vector mask on the all 3 texture? and then, did you put them all in moltiply set? or in another?

bye, have a nice day! :)

    3. Oh of course. No problem at all. :) I'm glad that the brush is working for you.
That's wonderful about the paper texture. Yeah go for it, and have fun!

Oh really! Thank you so much; that is very kind of you.

The reason that I used masks is because I wanted to erase the texture that was showing up on the character's faces. It was distracting. So on each texture I created a mask so that I could erase the texture just on their faces without fear. That way I could "paint" the texture back if I erased too much. The masks are like a safety net.

As far as Multiply is concerned, I use that so that the texture can be used as an overlay. White is transparent when a layer is set to Multiply, so that way it's like a wash over the painting.

You too hun, have a nice day.
